I was recently introduced to the Buddhist term, ‘Mudita’ from one of our PRO-NE Members, Peter Feinmann, who conducts a mindfulness practice. ‘Mudita’ means the pleasure that comes from other people’s well-being. This term really resonated with me during a recent PRO-NE Career Day.
Although the Career Day started off with heavy rain, it didn’t dampen the overwhelmingly positive spirits of 500 students, chaperones, sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, and event coordinators. Everyone came together with one goal in mind; to introduce fundamental building skills to the students in hopes to spark a greater interest and passion for the industry.
When the buses arrived at Bolton Fairgrounds in Lancaster, the students poured out and you could feel their excitement to learn something new and perform hands-on activities with their classmates. Volunteer exhibitors were on site to demonstrate framing, masonry, stair building, window installs, HVAC procedures, landscape techniques, and use of operating tools properly for carpentry applications. Students also learned about design/build remodeling and universal design.
Mock interviews were offered to the students to gain a better understanding of the process by providing tips for better interview results as they go forward with their co-op programs in the workplace. I aided in this effort and saw firsthand the student’s positive attitudes and willingness to listen to what the professionals had to say. PRO-NE members gave up their valuable time, who all made impactful contributions so that the students could become more successful in their future school and career plans.
It was a privilege and honor to be associated with the PRO-NE members who volunteered not only their time, but materials, expertise, and event coordination to make this a truly successful event for both the students and members. ‘Mudita’ was achieved at Career Day 2022 as so many prospered and experienced joy- a win-win for all involved.
We welcome our PRO-NE members to join us at our upcoming events.
